For ten years Finland has been celebrated for having the best roads in the FIA World Rally Championship. Jari-Matti Latvala, team principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing and the proudest Finn, admits that may not be the case now.
This week’s Repco Rally New Zealand (September 29th – October 2nd) brings back a series of beloved stages around the world. The same is true in Finland.
“I have to admit,” said Latvala. I always say Finland has the perfect atmosphere for rallying, but New Zealand has the stage.
“A good place on the road [in New Zealand] Camber is a way to increase speed into corners. The stages are generally very fast and flow smoothly. OK, no jumps like we have in Finland, but still very nice to drive. “
One person who knows how the roads around Auckland overlap with Jyväskylä is Ott Tänak, the man who won Finland this summer, and the Estonian’s verdict is equally positive.
“It’s like it was made for rallying,” he said.
“I’ve been watching videos to refresh myself and the roads look great.”
The time for waiting is over. By this weekend, drivers will decide where the cherished mantle of the world’s best roads lies.
